This photograph shows the view from the Mount Adams Incline, looking south, towards the Ohio River and the Central Bridge. The Central Bridge or Cincinnati & Newport Bridge, was finished in 1890 and was the first "standard" cantilever truss bridge to be built. Located next to the L&N Bridge seen in the background, the Central Bridge had a similar type and length of approach spans to that of the L&N bridge, with the piers built from identical stone. Demolished in 1992, the bridge was replaced by the Taylor-Southgate Bridge in 1995. Mount Adams Incline, extending from Lock St. to Rookwood Pl. and Celestial St., was the more important of the two local inclines. The inclines comprised two stilted, cable-drawn platforms that raised wagons and pedestrians, and later the Zoo-Eden Streetcars and automobiles 268 feet from Lock Street to the hilltop on an inclined track 945 feet long. The understructure, over house tops and streets, is made of stout lumber and had a track gauge of 4 feet 8.5 inches. Description: This photograph is an interior view of the Union Terminal, Cincinnati, Ohio. A newsstand, located in the rotunda, occupies the foreground of the image. Beyond the newsstand is a wide concourse with benches in the rear. The area immediately surrounding the newsstand includes various service windows (beverages, food, tobacco, tickets, etc.) Two huge murals decorate the walls on either side of the service area. Although planning discussions for a new terminal begin in the 1900s, the project was delayed by floods, World War I, and inter-railroad squabbles. Union Terminal was dedicated on March 31, 1933. The building ended its role as a railroad terminal in 1972; however, the city purchased it in 1975 to ensure its preservation. After experimenting with various options, the city and local organizations gave the historic building a new life as the Cincinnati Museum Center, which is home to several museums and other attractions, in 1990. Description: This photograph shows an exterior view of the Union Terminal, Cincinnati, Ohio, ca. 1935-1943. Cars are parked in front of the terminal and along the approach to the building. New York architectural firm Fellheimer and Wagner was in charge of its design. The firm’s designer, Roland Wank, and Paul Cret, an architectural consultant from Philadelphia, transformed the terminal’s original Classical design into an acclaimed Art Deco masterpiece. The rotunda of the terminal’s distinctive semi-dome is 180 feet wide and 106 feet high, making it second only to the half-dome of Australia’s Sydney Opera House in size. Two massive bas-relief sculptures representing Transportation (south side) and Commerce (north side) were carved by sculptor Maxfield Keck. Creations by visual artists Reinhold Weiss, Pierre Bourdelle, and William Hentschel decorated the terminal’s rotunda, concourse, and public rooms. The depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the "Fort Ball-Railroad Area Historic District," along with five other nearby depots. The earliest of these, located behind the one pictured, was built in 1862 by the Sandusky Dayton Cincinnati Railroad Company. Description: 1877 engineering drawing of the Ashtabula Bridge, built by the Cleveland and Erie Railroad Company in 1863. This drawing shows the bridge, designed by Amasa Stone, that was involved with the infamous Ashtabula Train Disaster of 1876. On December 29, 1876, a Howe truss bridge near Ashtabula, Ohio, collapsed while a train with three passenger cars was crossing it. The train and its passengers plunged sixty feet into a ravine and creek, and the lamps and stoves used to light and heat the train cars quickly ignited the wreckage. Ninety-two people died either in the accident or as a result of their injuries, and more than sixty of the surviving passengers were injured. Railroad accidents were commonplace during the late nineteenth century, due in part to tracks built quickly and cheaply by companies hoping to make tremendous profits. Railroad companies built thousands of miles of track in Ohio during the late nineteenth century, providing more opportunity for accidents to occur. Even after the Ashtabula Bridge collapse, the Howe truss bridge remained popular, primarily due to its relatively cheap cost. Still, railroad companies began to feel pressure from their customers to provide a safer means of travel. By 1888, more than two thousand iron bridges existed in Ohio. The state had fewer than nine hundred wooden bridges still in use at this time. View on Ohio Memory.
